Identification of Ulcers and Erosions by the Novel Pillcam™ Crohn’s Capsule Using a Convolutional Neural Network: A Multicentre Pilot Study

Capsule endoscopy is a central element in the management of patients with suspected or known Crohn’s Disease. The Pillcam™ Crohn’s Capsule system has been developed for panendoscopic evaluation of these patients. Our team has recently published an article on the prestigious Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis entitled “Identification of Ulcers and Erosions by the Novel Pillcam™ Crohn’s Capsule Using a Convolutional Neural Network: A Multicentre Pilot Study”. In this study, our group describes the development of a deep learning tool for automatic detection of ulcers and erosions of the small bowel and colon. Our algorithm demonstrated high performance levels, with a sensitivity of 90%, a specificity of 96% and an accuracy of 92%. The development of these artificial intelligence techniques paves the way for introduction to clinical practice of automatic systems for detection of clinically significant lesions, optimizing the diagnostic performance and efficiency of monitoring Crohn’s disease activity.
